Every concrete slab cracks. Control joints are how a good contractor decides where, and their spacing is one of the few things you can check yourself after the crew leaves.
As concrete cures it loses volume. A slab restrained by friction against its base cannot shrink freely, so tension builds until the concrete tears. This happens on every slab ever poured, with no exceptions and no product that prevents it.
So the question was never whether your patio will crack. It is whether the crack lands somewhere deliberate and straight, or somewhere random and diagonal.
A control joint is a groove cut or tooled into the slab, typically a quarter of its depth. It creates a deliberate weak line, so when tension builds the concrete breaks there — below the surface, in a straight line, invisible.

Also at the line where a new slab meets an existing one. That is an expansion joint rather than a control joint and it needs to be a full separation with compressible material, not a saw cut.
On stamped and coloured slabs, joints are often hidden in the pattern — run along a grout line of the stamp so they read as part of the design rather than a cut across it. That takes planning before the pour, because the stamp layout and the joint layout have to be decided together.
A stamped patio with saw cuts running arbitrarily across the pattern is a job where nobody thought about it until afterwards.
